In
the United States, osteopathic medicine is a medical care system
that combines the needs of the patient with the current practice
of medicine and surgery. Our philosophy emphasizes the body's ability
to heal itself. This is accomplished by correct musculoskeletal
structure allowing the body to function properly.
Osteopathic
physicians (D.O.s) attend unique medical schools; they receive the
traditional four year comprehensive medical education with an additional
emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. We treat the
total person rather than the disease alone.
However,
it is not just our philosophy that sets us apart! We are also specially
trained in manual medicine for treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.
With this training emphasis, some osteopathic physicians specialize
in rehabilitation and sports-medicine - indeed, you'll find many
D.O.s as pro-sports and Olympic team physicians.
